GOAN FISH CURRY
Ingredients
2 medium pomfrets, cut into darnes
Salt to taste
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tbsp lemon juice
½ cup scraped fresh coconut
3-4 dried red chillies, stemmed
2 green chillies, slit
1 inch ginger, roughly chopped
5-6 garlic cloves
1 tbsp coriander seeds
6-8 black peppercorns
2 tbsps oil
1 medium onion, chopped
Salt to taste
½ cup coconut milk
Fresh coriander sprig for garnish
Red rice for serving
Method
1. Marinate the pomfret darnes with salt, turmeric powder and lemon juice for 10 minutes.
2. Take a grinder jar. Add scraped coconut, dried red chillies, green chillies, ginger, garlic, coriander seeds and black peppercorns. Add ¾ cup water and grind to fine paste.
3. Heat oil in a deep nonstick pan. Add onion and sauté till golden brown. Add prepared paste and sauté till oil separates.
4. Add 1½ cups water, salt and once the mixture comes to a boil, lower the heat, add fish darnes, cover and cook for 5-6 minutes. Add coconut milk and cook for a minute more.
5. Transfer in a serving bowl, garnish with coriander sprig and serve hot with red rice.
